The LINC/ESL Supply Instructor plans, prepares, and delivers English language instruction for newcomers and immigrants to Canada; obtains and develops learning materials as required; is knowledgeable about the PBLA protocols for classroom assessment; organizes and maintains documentation of participants’ progress; maintains clear and accurate academic and administrative student records. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: To plan, develop and deliver Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program. This position reports to Senior Manager, Newcomer Services and is part of CUPE Local 7797.

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Assess and identify learners’ needs; plan and facilitate a curriculum for assigned program, including online/distance delivery, within the framework of LINC Curriculum Guidelines and Canadian Language Benchmarks
• Ensure that instruction and assessment are aligned with the Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) approach.
• Report on learners’ progress and evaluate the program regularly with the learners to assess if it is meeting their language and integration needs
• Work collaboratively with a team of instructors and settlement workers
• Keep up-to-date on materials, resources and tools of teaching English as a second language
• Maintain accurate program records and statistics and prepare lesson plans and required reports in a timely manner

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
• University graduate (Education and/or Linguistics preferred) plus TESL Ontario certified
• Minimum 2 years of experience in teaching English as a second language
• Experience in second language acquisition curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, including Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)
• Knowledge of CLB framework, learner assessment tools and placement guideline
• Knowledge of online teaching techniques and tools as they apply to English as a Second Language distance instruction
• Demonstrated experience and willingness to teach a variety of English levels including multi-level and split-level classes

Position Description
This is a Part-Time Non-Union contract position scheduled to work 15 hours per week, providing online instruction to a CLB 5-6 class from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Duties
– Design, implement, and instruct English as a Second Language classes in a LINC program based on the PBLA (Portfolio Based Language Assessment) guidelines.
– Provide synchronous and asynchronous online instruction using virtual conferencing tools, language learning software, and MS programs.
– Design level-appropriate PBLA-based module plans as well as daily lesson plans following the Revised Canadian Language Benchmarks 2012.
– Develop a diversity of course materials integrating real-world task objectives and activities based on the LINC Curriculum Guidelines.
– Integrate online resources, Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Avenue.ca, and other digital delivery tools in language instruction.
– Conduct ongoing needs assessments with learners, assist them in setting learning goals, and develop lessons accordingly.
– Design assessment tasks for ongoing evaluation of learners’ progress based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks and PBLA guidelines.
– Coach learners in organizing and updating the PBLA e-Portfolio on Avenue.ca as evidence of their learning progress.
– Prepare learners’ progress reports and conduct one-on-one interviews with learners to provide feedback on learning progress.
– Maintain attendance records and other documentation as required.

Qualifications
– Valid TESL Ontario / OCELT certificate from TESL Ontario.
– Minimum two years’ experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult newcomers. 
– Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in teaching the corresponding CLB levels.
– In-depth understanding of and experience using the Revised Canadian Language Benchmarks 2012 and the LINC Curriculum Guidelines.

The Volunteer’s Role
This placement will support the efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity of the AGAPE AIDS CONTROL PROGRAMME (AACP) teachers in the area of teaching English to Secondary School students. The English teacher is expected to provide technical assistance to other English teachers at the organization’s school plus teaching in class to enhance English knowledge among students who are attending the school after having dropped out of the public schools due to issues like carrying pregnancy while still in school.

Develop approaches to improve English teaching
Design and implement teaching curriculum that will help improve English teaching and implement
Build English teaching capacity of staff

About us
Nevy’s Language is a platform for live, online group English classes for adult immigrants in Canada and the USA.
We provide affordable learning for adult immigrants to North America by providing low cost, live classes.
We are a night school for students in Canada and the USA.

Our Students
Our students are 25-45 year old adults immigrants.
They are based in Canada and the USA.
75% of our students are at Level 2 or below, i.e. beginners!
Most of our students work during the day and can only take classes in the evening

Our Levels
We offer five levels: Starter, Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate
Each level is 16 weeks long.
We provide you with the teaching materials and teacher guides See the curriculum outline here.
75% of our groups are Starter and Beginner levels.

Our Classes (Groups)
We run group English classes.
Each group is taught by one teacher and has up to 6-10 students.
We have five levels of English and offer several times of the day for each level. Each group has a time and a level associated with it.
For example, we have a 8am Starter, 9am Starter, 10am Starter, etc.
Most of our classes run at night and in the Eastern (New York) time zone.
A group meets every day from Monday to Friday at the same time.
That’s 5 hours of learning each week.

How we pay
We pride ourselves in being an affordable learning option for students, so students pay CAD $3, $4 and $5/hour for classes while teachers are paid CAD $20/hour depending on experience.
Pay is per group and monthly. You can make CAD 400 per group per month. This is equivalent to CAD $20/hr.
You don’t have to start at the lowest pay. Pay is negotiated before you start.
You get paid on the 1st of every month for the previous month’s work. We offer direct deposit!
You can take on as many groups as you wish. We have an internal board where we post available groups. Some teachers teach 2 groups only while others do 12 groups a day!

Minimum commitment to teach
The minimum commitment to teach with us is 4 months.
This means that if you assign yourself to a group, you have to stay with them for 4 months. If you leave before the 4 months are over, there will be a deduction of pay. This is to deter teachers from selecting groups that they are not ready to teach.
Abandoning a group within the 1st week will result in the forfeiture of payment for that group.
Please note that we have a very strict absence policy and teachers are held to a code of conduct. Only 1 absence per calendar month is permitted.

How to select your classes
We have a team of student recruiters that signs up students.
Based on the student’s requested level and time, we create groups and post them on an internal job board.
You will be able to assign yourself to the groups that you want.

The St. George’s Centre for ESL (part of the Continuing Education department within the Upper Grand District School Board) is looking for skilled, passionate and qualified individuals for our adult non-credit English as a Second Language (ESL) Supply List. These instructors will fill in for absent ESL Instructors on an as-needed basis and on short notice for short-term, temporary positions in the Upper Grand DSB. Employees on our Supply List can apply for long-term assignments and permanent positions as they become available.

Program Overview – English Language Services, Community Programs

Newcomer Programs & Services has served newcomers and refugees in Toronto for over four decades. Its mandate is to help newcomers and refugees settle, adjust, and integrate into society. Funded by the three levels of government, WoodGreen Newcomer Programs & Services operates English language training programs, settlement services, employment support programs, mentorship, networking activities, and social and recreational activities. Newcomer Programs & Services is committed to providing friendly and professional services to all newcomers to help them connect with Canadian society and their new way of life.

What You Will Do

Deliver instruction to English language learners in accordance with Canadian Language Benchmarks, and performs all duties associated with Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA), specific program curriculum, and other guidelines set out by WoodGreen and its funders.
Develop appropriate lesson plans, teaching methodologies, materials and activities based on the experiences, social contexts, and life goals of learners, and as approved by the Manager of English Language Services. The preparation time is included in the instruction time.
Respectfully collaborate and cooperate with other staff within WoodGreen to ensure clients’ success and integration in programming.
In consultation with the Manager, arrange for guest speakers, fieldtrips, and other computerized/on-line learning activities to facilitate learning of learners. This planning activity is included in the instruction time.
Start classes on time and adhere to the scheduled breaks and dismissal time.
Using PBLA assessment practices and principles, evaluate progress of learners on an on-going basis, and promote them to the next level as required.
Monitor learners’ attendance, follow up with learners who are absent or are at risk of dropping out. Inform Manager if attendance drops.
Support WoodGreen’s learner recruitment efforts through providing input, encouraging referrals from existing learners, and supporting recruitment activities.
Monitor the settlement needs of learners and links them to WoodGreen’s services and programs.
Submit curriculum outlines, lesson plans, attendance records, and statistical and program reports on time. The plan and the preparation of records and reports are included in the instruction time.
Maintain program resources (e.g., computers, instructional materials, and books) and ensure they are in good condition.
Participate in regular supervisory sessions with the Manager of English Language Services.
Ensure the anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved.
What You Bring to the Team

Bachelor’s Degree(s) in Teaching, Adult Education or Social Science.
TESL Ontario Certificate; current member in good standing with TESL Ontario.
Fully trained in Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) an asset.
2 + years of experience in teaching English as a Second Language and implementing PBLA.
Experience using technology and delivering online classes and hybrid models effectively.
Experience in teaching multi-levels in a multicultural environment.
